A deep rock canyon cut by a river through the mountains on the Algerian border, beside the small mountain oasis of Mides. Its walls are layers of coloured rock twisting through sharp bends, with a stream and palms on the floor. In Roman times Mides was a town called Mades, which became a bishopric in the early Christian centuries. Its old mud-and-stone village on the canyon rim has been abandoned and now stands as striking ruins above the drop. The canyon is famous on screen, having appeared in international films including The English Patient. From the rim a short path shows the bends from above, or you can go down to the canyon floor with a guide. Mides is visited with Chebika and Tamerza on one tour from Tozeur. Entry is free; the rim has no railings in many places, so keep an eye on children.

Yes, with care: the rim has no railings in many places, and the path is rocky.
