Miguel Pereira is a hill town in south-central Rio de Janeiro state, at 618 metres, with the title of «climatic resort» for its mild climate and clean air, and known for its rivers, waterfalls and clear water. The Coroado people lived here until the eighteenth century, and its history is tied to Vassouras, Paty do Alferes and the spread of coffee growing in the Paraíba do Sul valley, after Garcia Rodrigues Paes opened the «New Road» between Rio de Janeiro and the mining regions. Tourism has grown strongly in recent years, with hotel occupancy topping 99% on holidays. New attractions include a large dinosaur park, the Rua Coberta covered street of restaurants and events, and the Maria Fumaça tourist steam train, and it has been named the state's capital of entertainment and food.
