The Wanda mines are open-cast mines of semi-precious stones in the red-earth forests of Misiones, yielding amethyst, quartz, agate and more, best known for rock cavities lined with violet amethyst crystals. The visit is led by a local guide included in the entry price: visitors walk through tunnels and open pits, see crystals still set in the rock, then watch in the workshops how stones are cut and polished. The tour ends in a large shop of stones, jewellery and ornaments. The mines are about an hour's drive south of Puerto Iguazú and usually fill half a day, or a stop on the way to the San Ignacio Miní ruins. Payment is cash at the entrance.
