Mirador Bandurrias is San Martín de los Andes' best-known viewpoint, on a wooded hill west of town, looking down the length of Lake Lácar between the mountains, the town on its shore and the surrounding forest. The land belongs to the Curruhuinca community of the Mapuche people, who run the site and collect the entry fee. Visitors walk up a forest trail from the edge of town in about two hours, or drive a gravel road. Halfway there is a small information point, and at the top there are places to sit and views in several directions. The fee is paid at the viewpoint in cash or by bank transfer. It is loveliest before sunset, when the lake changes colour. Bring water; the climb is tiring on hot days.
