Mnemba is a small green island off the northeast coast of Zanzibar. Clear blue water surrounds it, a wide coral reef rings it, and colourful fish, turtles and dolphins live in the water around it. The island is roughly triangular, about 500 m across, and lies about 3 km offshore. An oval reef 7 by 4 km surrounds it and has been declared a marine conservation area. It holds many kinds of coral, endangered green turtles nest there, three species of dolphin live around it, and whale sharks sometimes pass. The island itself is private: only its guests may land, and non-guests must stay 500 m away. You take a boat from the coast to the reef, then snorkel or dive over the coral among the fish, and may see dolphins or turtles. You reach Muyuni Beach in about a 90-minute drive from Stone Town, then cross by boat in about 20 minutes. The sea is calmest and clearest in November and March. Do not touch the coral or chase the dolphins.
