Molinos is a small adobe village in the Calchaquí Valleys of Salta, on Route 40 some 45 kilometres south of Cachi, where the Amaicha and Luracatao rivers meet. Founded in the mid-seventeenth century, parts of it were declared a National Historic Place in 1975. Its quiet lanes of whitewashed adobe houses lead to a small square and to an old colonial house, once the home of Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi, the last royalist governor of Salta, now an inn. Around it lie coloured hills, a vicuña breeding station, a craftspeople's association weaving local textiles, and walks and horse rides along the river, which becomes a natural swimming spot in summer. Wandering is free. The climate is dry, with warm days and freezing nights, and the road from Cachi is partly gravel.
