Mongaguá is a beach town of about 62,000 people on the south coast of São Paulo state, in the Baixada Santista, between Praia Grande and Itanhaém, with a name that comes from Tupi. The Guarani lived along the Mongaguá and Aguapeú rivers when Europeans arrived. Tourism began here in 1910 with the building of the Hotel Balneário Marinho, now the town hall, and grew with coastal development companies in the following decades; its streets were laid out on a regular grid. Its coast runs through the beaches of Agenor de Campos, Itaoca, Santa Eugênia, Vera Cruz, Central and Vila de São Paulo, with fairly calm water suited to families, making it a close summer escape for São Paulo.
