Monte Hermoso is a beach town in southern Buenos Aires province, a summer favourite for people from Bahía Blanca and La Pampa, with a beach running 32 kilometres on a very gentle slope backed by dune ridges. It has a rare feature: because its coast runs east to west, it is the only place in the country where the sun both rises and sets over the sea. The beach's gentle slope suits families, with cafés and umbrellas in season. About a kilometre from the centre stands the historic Recalada lighthouse, with a museum of old naval pieces, and to the north the wide Sauce Grande lagoon among the dunes, for fishing and water sports. The beach is free, and the season runs December to March. Nearby Pehuen-Có, with fossil footprints of extinct animals, makes a side trip.
