Monuriki is a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Viti Levu, in the Mamanuca group of western Fiji. It is the smallest and southernmost of three islets that sit close together, about 46 km in a straight line from Nadi. The island is volcanic, about 1.15 km long and 600 metres wide, covering roughly 0.4 square kilometres, with a highest point of 178 metres. The people of Yanuya village are its custodians, and with their agreement experts from the National Trust of Fiji and BirdLife International have been restoring its habitat since 2011. It became world famous when the 2000 film «Cast Away» was shot here. Coral reef surrounds the island on every side, turning the water around it a clear turquoise. Rocky volcanic hills covered with palms and pandanus rise from small white beaches and end in a jagged peak in the southeast. The island can be reached only by boat and has no facilities, so bring water, shade and sunscreen. Respect the island's custodians, leave no rubbish, and do not pick plants, as the island is being restored.
