Moreeb Dune, Tal Moreeb in Arabic, is a huge sand dune in the Rub' al Khali desert, about 16 km south of Mezairaa in Liwa Oasis and 175 km southwest of the city of Abu Dhabi in a straight line. It is the tallest dune in the UAE and one of the highest sand dunes in the world. The dune is reported to be about 300 metres high and about 1,600 metres long, with a slip face of up to around 50 degrees. That makes it one of the world's best-known hill-climb sites for cars, and every winter it hosts the Moreeb Dune Festival, with car and motorbike races and heritage events. The wall of fine orange sand rises sharply from a flat plain, and the wind draws delicate ripples across it that change colour as the sun moves. Dune ridges roll endlessly to the horizon and turn red and gold at sunset. Visitors stand at the foot of the dune to watch cars attempt the climb, and some walk up to a nearby viewpoint. Come in the morning or at sunset, as midday heat is fierce, and driving on sand needs a four-wheel drive and experience.
