Morne Trois Pitons National Park was Dominica's first national park and has been a World Heritage Site since 1997. Steep volcanic mountains covered in rainforest, deep valleys and lakes in old craters fill it, the best known being Boeri Lake and Freshwater Lake, above the village of Laudat. The park was founded in July 1975 and covers about 7,000 ha. It is named after its highest mountain, Morne Trois Pitons, the mountain of three peaks, at 1,342 m the island's second-highest. All the major rivers of the island's south rise here. Volcanic activity shows in hot springs, steam vents and mud pools. You can drive up to Freshwater Lake, the island's largest, often wrapped in mist. From there a forest trail leads to Boeri Lake, calm water among volcanic boulders and green hills. On the way are tree ferns and birds, and you may pass a small waterfall. Boeri Lake is 9 km in a straight line north-east of Roseau and 3 km from Trafalgar Falls. Sources give about US$5 for a single site, around EC$13.50, or about US$12 for a week pass covering all sites. It is cool and wet up high, so bring a jacket, and do not hike alone.
