The Morrão, the «Big Hill», is a massive rise in the Vale do Capão in Palmeiras, one of the landmark sights of Chapada Diamantina National Park. It stands 998 metres high and is a «witness hill» of the Sincorá range, like its neighbours Pai Inácio and Morro do Camelo to the north, a rock remnant that held out while the land around it eroded. Geologists explain that the valley and hill were shaped by fractures along the hinge of the fold and by the contact between the Chapada Diamantina group's sandstone and the sandy clay below, so erosion first cut downwards, then sideways. It is described as «one of the icons of the Chapada Diamantina landscape». Famous as it is, it is not often climbed, as the trail to the top is considered very hard, and camping there was banned because of fire risk after a major blaze in 2013. It is best seen from the valley and Caeté-Açu village; the climb needs an experienced guide and good fitness.
