Morretes is a small historic town of about 16,000 people in Paraná state, named after the little hills (morros) around it, known for its restaurants and its traditional dish, barreado, and home to many historic monuments. It is reached by road or on the Serra Verde Express tourist train from Curitiba, which stops here on its way to Paranaguá. Its main street, Rua das Flores, is a promenade on the bank of the Nhundiaquara river lined with historic houses, among them the one where Emperor Pedro II slept, the town's marco zero, a fountain and its first telegraph office. Over the river, the steel Old Bridge leads to the restaurants. Around it lies Pico do Marumbi State Park, created in 1990 over 8,745 hectares of Atlantic Forest, visited for waterfall swimming, walking and climbing.
