A steep trail.
Morro de Santo Antônio is a prominent hill in Santo Antônio de Leverger, Mato Grosso, about 27 kilometres from Cuiabá, rising to five hundred metres above sea level. From afar it looks like a lone mass above the plain, and it has become one of the state's best-known postcard views, appearing on its coat of arms. The hill played an important part in the history of Mato Grosso: during the Paraguayan War lookout posts were set up on it, making it the key point for stopping any Paraguayan advance up the Cuiabá River towards the capital. In 2006 it was listed as historic, cultural and environmental heritage of the state. The climb starts from a trail off the Palmiro Paes de Barros road, about eight kilometres past the junction with the Rodovia dos Imigrantes towards Santo Antônio. The trail is very steep in places, and the summit gives a wide view over Cuiabá, its river and the surrounding plains. Climb early in the morning to avoid the heat, go with a guide or a group, and carry plenty of water.
