Morro Santana is the highest point in Porto Alegre at 311 metres, in the east of the city. It covers some six hundred hectares owned by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, and in 2006 it became a protected area, the Morro Santana Wildlife Refuge. The hill is one of Porto Alegre's most important remaining natural areas, a transition zone between two biomes with a complex geology, a disused quarry, artificial lakes and small waterfalls. It is also an important watershed where streams rise, among them the Arroio Dilúvio that flows into Lake Guaíba. Radio and television masts crown the summit, which gives a wide view over the city, Lake Guaíba and the surrounding plains. Walkers and nature lovers follow trails through woods and grassland. Go in a group or with a guide, and in daylight.
