Mosqueiro is an island on the south bank of the Pará river, part of the city of Belém and about 67 km from its centre. It has 17 km of river beaches with tidal fresh water, popular with Belém's people especially in the dry season. Its largest settlement is Vila, which people also simply call Mosqueiro. The name is probably a corruption of moqueio, a Tupinambá word for smoking meat and fish: in the early years of Portuguese colonisation the Tupinambá supplied Belém with smoked meat and fish. The rubber boom brought electricity and the first holidaymakers, and since 12 January 1976 a 1,457-metre bridge has linked it to the mainland, making it an easy day trip by car from Belém.
