Mount Bintumani, also known as Loma Mansa, is the highest peak in Sierra Leone and in the Loma Mountains, at 1,945 metres. It lies in the north-east of the country, far from the towns. It draws lovers of long hikes and wild nature, and the climb takes a trip of several days. Rainforest covers its lower slopes and shelters many animals, including pygmy hippos, dwarf crocodiles, the rufous fishing owl and numerous primates. Above the forest, open grassland runs to the summit. The area is part of the Loma Mountains reserve. From afar you see a sharp grey rocky summit rising above grassy green slopes scattered with large boulders. On the plains at the base are fields and shrubs, and the mountain looks like one broad mass under a blue sky. Clouds often cover its top. It is about 63 km from Kabala in a straight line and about 247 km from Freetown. The climb usually takes two or three days, with guides and porters from local villages. Arrange the trip in advance and carry a tent, water and gear for cold nights. The dry season is best.
