An easy volcano

An active volcano rising about 1,950 metres in the highlands of Bengkulu province near the town of Curup, one of Sumatra's easiest volcanoes to climb, as an old paved road runs almost to the summit, so beginners and active families make it up. The summit has two neighbouring craters: an active one steaming with sulphur smell and a dormant one, with a broad view over the highlands, forests and valley lakes, and on clear days the Indian Ocean. Many climb at night to see sunrise above the clouds. Entry is a small fee of about ten thousand rupiah. The climb from the gate is about three to four hours on foot, and part can be done by motorbike with locals. Check the volcano's status before climbing, keep away from the active crater's rim, and bring warm clothes for the top. Combine it with the rafflesia at Kepahiang on a highland trip.
