The Enipeas gorge
An easy, lovely path from Litochoro needing no experience.
**Not to the summit.** Reaching **Mytikas** normally takes **two days**: a day's climb to a mountain refuge at about 2,100 m and a night there, then the summit and descent the next day. It needs **good fitness** and a **pre-booked refuge** (they fill in summer), and โ the **final section to Mytikas is not walking but a rock scramble** along an edge, needing your hands and a head for heights โ there are **deaths every year** among unprepared enthusiasts. For a single day: walk the **Enipeas gorge** from Litochoro, or climb to the refuge and come back.
The **Enipeas gorge** is the answer. A footpath starting from the town of **Litochoro** at the mountain's foot, following the river into the gorge between rock and trees, past clear pools, small waterfalls, wooden bridges and an old monastery. It needs no climbing experience and no equipment, and you can walk a section and turn back according to your energy. โ But the ground is **uneven with rocky stretches and water crossings** โ closed walking shoes are essential. Add that **Litochoro** itself is an attractive mountain town with restaurants and a view, and the beach is minutes away.

**The highest mountain in Greece** and the most famous in European myth: its highest peak, **Mytikas**, stands at about **2,917 metres**, some ninety kilometres south-west of Thessaloniki, where it drops almost straight towards the Aegean. In Greek myth this was **the home of the twelve gods** โ Zeus, Hera, Athena, Apollo and the rest โ and its summit, hidden in cloud most days of the year, is the reason for that idea: a mountain visible from the plain whose top is not. In **1938 it became Greece's first national park**, and it is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Its plant diversity is exceptional โ more than 1,700 species, dozens of them growing nowhere else โ because a single slope holds a Mediterranean climate at its foot and an Alpine one at its summit. โ **Reaching the summit is not a stroll**: it normally takes two days with a night in a mountain refuge, requires good fitness, and the **final section to Mytikas is a rock scramble** needing hands, which kills people every year.
