A mountain in Jizhou, north of Tianjin and about 90 km from Beijing, nicknamed «the first mountain east of the capital»; its scenic area covers about 20 square kilometres and its highest peak reaches 858 m. The Qianlong Emperor is said to have remarked that had he known of Panshan sooner, he would not have needed to travel south to Jiangnan. Stone paths climb among huge granite boulders and pines to the peaks, old pavilions and temples dot the slopes, the summits look out over the plains and hills around, and the woods turn colour in autumn; it has been a 5A scenic area since 2007. Tickets are CNY 130 from April to October and CNY 70 in winter, and it is open from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm, per visitor guides. A cable car shortens the climb, and the drive from Beijing or Tianjin takes about two hours.
