The Mount Pinatubo Crater is a green-blue lake inside the crater of an active volcano in the Zambales Mountains on Luzon, reached by a long four-wheel-drive ride and then on foot. It is one of the most powerful natural sights near Manila, with towering grey walls around still water. Most people were unaware of the mountain's eruptive past before 1991. On 15 June that year came the second-largest land eruption of the twentieth century, and early predictions led to the evacuation of tens of thousands, saving many lives. The summit fell from 1,745 metres to 1,486 metres, and the crater then filled to form a lake of 1.83 square kilometres. The trip starts at Santa Juliana by four-wheel drive, crossing a broad valley of ash and volcanic sand and streams, between walls cut by floods. You then walk a gradual climb to a platform overlooking the lake. The mountains around the water are bare and streaked with green. This is still home to the indigenous Aeta people, so respect them and ask before taking photographs. The site is 91.1 km in a straight line north-west of Manila and 33.1 km south-west of Capas. A 2026 guide says foreign visitors need a visit clearance at least 20 days ahead, so arrange it with an approved operator. The area sometimes closes for bad weather or local orders, so check first. Start before dawn, and bring a dust mask and plenty of water.
