The highest mountain of the Qinling range and of Shaanxi, whose summit Baxiantai rises to 3,767 m, the highest peak in China east of the Tibetan Plateau. It divides the basins of the Han and Wei rivers; the poet Li Bai wrote of climbing it, and old tradition links its name to the planet Venus. Climate zones from warm temperate to cold follow one another up its slopes, so forests and plants change with height; it became a nature reserve in 1965 and a national one in 1986. Visitors go up through the forest park from the north by bus and cable car towards the peaks and glacial lakes. Tickets cost CNY 90 from 21 March and 54 in winter, the shuttle bus 90 return and the cable cars 50 to 120, with real-name timed booking and last tickets sold at 3 pm, per visitor guides; it is cold at the top even in summer.
