Lucerne's eternal trio: Titlis for permanent snow and maximum altitude โ dearest, most family-dazzling; Pilatus for rock drama and the world's steepest rack railway on its golden boat-and-train round; Rigi the 'queen of mountains' for ease, meadows and venerable cog trains above the great lakes โ a Half Fare card softens all three. One day and a family wanting snow: Titlis, no debate.
The lifts are easy standing cabins and the summit is levelled terraces and restaurants โ all exertion optional (bridge, deep snow). Two cautions: sharp cold, so dress them full winter; and 3,000-plus altitude can ache sensitive heads โ water, slow rhythm, and prompt descent for any heavy head.
The ~7:30 train from Lucerne (sit right for the lake), lifts in sequence to summit before ten, two hours among terraces, bridge and grotto, summit lunch or descend to cheaper Engelberg, an hour in the pretty abbey village โ returning to Lucerne by late afternoon for the wooden bridge's sunset. Switzerland's most famous concentrated day.

Titlis is Switzerland's 'guaranteed' snow: a 3,238-metre summit of permanent ice above Engelberg village โ an hour from Lucerne โ reached by a lift sequence crowned by the Rotair, the world's first rotating cable car: the cabin turns fully round while flying the glacier's crevasses, giving every stander the whole panorama. On top: eternal-snow terraces; the Cliff Walk โ Europe's highest suspension bridge, hung over a 500-metre drop for seconds of delicious terror; an ice grotto in the living glacier's belly; and the free-sledge Snow Park all summer long. For Gulf families this is the famous first-snow appointment. Between Lucerne and Engelberg the lovely Zentralbahn runs half-hourly โ and the full day from Lucerne is the standard formula outright.
