**The highest summit in all the Cyclades** — 1,004 m, in the middle of Naxos above the village of Filoti. The name is from **Zeus**: local legend has the god raised in the **Cave of Zas** on the mountainside — a **third claim**, alongside the Dikteon and Idaean caves on Crete, each asserting it was where he grew up. And the cave has in fact produced evidence of **use since the Neolithic**. The climb passes through landscape you would not expect on a Cycladic island: **stone terraces**, oak trees, valleys, goat herds, and dry-stone walls running to the horizon. ✅ From the summit on a clear day you see a **chain of islands**: Paros, Mykonos and Delos, sometimes Santorini. ⚠ But it is **real mountain walking**, not a stroll: rocky, exposed and waterless. ✅ At the top are a **stone cairn** and a survey pillar.
A chain of Cycladic islands across the horizon on a clear day.
A cave on the flank where legend says Zeus was raised.
Dry walls, oaks and pasture you would not expect on a Cycladic island.
Mount Zas, 84302 Naxos, Greece
**None of them is "right" — and the question itself misunderstands how myth works.** ✅ **The three claims**: the **Dikteon Cave** in eastern Crete (birth), the **Idaean Cave** in central Crete (upbringing), and the **Cave of Zas** here on Naxos (upbringing). Each has an ancient tradition behind it, and each has **archaeological evidence of genuine cult**. ✅ **Why so many**: Greek myth **was not a single managed text** — it was local versions competing and coexisting. Every region wanted to **attach itself to the greatest god**, because that brought pilgrims, prestige and money. ✅ **So the multiplicity is itself the information**: these are real cult sites competing for a connection to Zeus, not «correct» and «incorrect» ones. ⚠ **What is established at Zas specifically**: the cave **was genuinely in use from the Neolithic** — meaning people held it sacred thousands of years before the Zeus story was told, and **the sanctity may be older than the name**.
**A chain of islands — provided it is clear, and that is the decisive variable.** ✅ **On a very clear day**: **Paros** and **Antiparos** to the west with complete clarity, **Mykonos**, **Delos** and **Tinos** to the north, **Ios** and **Amorgos** to the south, **sometimes Santorini** on the far southern horizon and **Ikaria and Samos** to the east. That sight — a whole archipelago from one point — is **the real reason to climb**. ✅ **You also see the whole of Naxos**: the green valley beneath you, the terraces, the white villages and the sandy west coast — and you understand at once **why Naxos was the richest of the Cyclades**: it is the only one with water and land. ⚠ **On a hazy or hot day**: **you see almost nothing** but white murk — summer heat builds a haze that closes the horizon. ✅ **So the rule**: **climb on a clear early morning**, ideally in **spring or late autumn** after rain has washed the air — that is when the view is at its best.
