An elegant Victorian mansion of 65 rooms in the Tudor style, on a small peninsula between Muckross Lake and Lough Leane 6 km from Killarney; it was extensively improved in the 1850s ahead of a visit by Queen Victoria. Its owners gave the house and its lands to the Irish state in 1932, forming the core of the country's first national park, and the tour leads through rooms furnished in period style, from the grand reception rooms down to the servants' kitchens below stairs. The house is surrounded by superb gardens of rhododendrons and azaleas and a rock garden running down to the lakeshore, and nearby the Traditional Farms recreate Irish rural life of the 1940s with animals and farmhouses. House tickets are €9 for adults and a joint ticket with the Traditional Farms €18; it opens daily from 09:15, closing at different times by season, per the official website, while the gardens are free.
