Grindelwald is larger, more famous, with services, restaurants, shopping and easier transport (car and train reach it directly) — and far more crowded. Mürren is smaller, car-free, quieter, and its view of the trio is clearer and closer because it faces them squarely. For families, longer stays and convenience: Grindelwald. For the view, the quiet and photography: Mürren. Visit both if you can — an hour apart.

Mürren is a mountain village perched on the lip of a terrace 1,650 metres above the Lauterbrunnen valley, **entirely car-free** — reachable only by cable car or mountain railway, which is why it remains a single street of wooden houses, barns and family guesthouses along the edge of the drop, facing the wall of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau head-on. That position makes Mürren the finest "balcony" in Switzerland: you sit in a café or walk the one street with the three mountains in front of you and nothing in between — a view people pay heavily to reach by cable car, and here it is free from the pavement. The village is far quieter than Grindelwald and never approaches its crowds. The Schilthorn cable car departs from here, along with easy level walks along the terrace (the famous "North Face" trail to Gimmelwald), and in winter a quiet ski area. For accommodation: the choice for anyone who wants to sleep above the valley in complete silence.
