France's national museum of sport, occupying part of the Allianz Riviera stadium in western Nice since moving from Paris in 2014. The collection is vast: more than a hundred thousand objects covering French and world sport from the sixteenth century to today, including shirts, equipment, trophies, documents, posters and film. Among its notable holdings are a Diego Maradona shirt from a 1986 match, bicycles from the Tour de France, Olympic torches, and equipment from the beginnings of nearly every sport. The display is interactive in parts: simulations of sporting movement and measurements of speed and reaction, which makes it more suited to families than the name suggests. The museum also raises the social side: sport and politics, women in sport, colonialism and doping. It is far from central Nice and reached by tram.

Partly. The historical and social sections are interesting in themselves — how popular games became organised sports, and how sport was used politically in the twentieth century. The interactive sections are enjoyable for anyone. But a large part of the collection depends on knowing the names and the matches, which means less to someone who does not follow. With children it is a good choice without reservation.
The area is less touristic: the stadium and museum, the Nice Étoile shopping centre, and the Var valley with its exhibition halls. But from there the airport and the road towards Antibes and Cannes are easily reached. Tram line 3 links the area to the centre in about twenty minutes, and line 2 reaches the airport.
