The Desembarco, or «Landing», Museum stands on Punta Cuevas at the south end of Puerto Madryn, close to where 153 Welsh settlers came ashore from the sailing ship Mimosa on 28 July 1865, beginning the Welsh settlement of Chubut and the first settlement on the city's site. It opened on 25 May 2001. The museum tells the story of the long ocean voyage, the hard first days on the beach and the colony's later growth in the Chubut valley, with photographs, documents and old tools. Punta Cuevas means «Cave Point», after natural hollows in the cliff where the settlers are thought to have sheltered for a few days; some are still preserved in a historic park. It sits on the coast road, a walk from the centre along the seafront, with views over the bay; opening hours vary by season.
