The End of the World Museum is one of Ushuaia's oldest museums, run since May 2008 in two buildings on bayfront Maipú street: the old bank building at number 173, among the town's first masonry buildings, and the Old Government House and Governor's Residence at number 465, a national historic monument since 1983. The museum tells Tierra del Fuego's natural and human history: the life of the region's indigenous peoples, the voyages of explorers and missionaries, shipwrecks in the nearby channels, the island's birds, and the town's beginnings. In the Old Government House, rooms are furnished as they were in the early 20th century. It opens Monday to Friday 10:00-19:00 and Saturday 13:00-19:00, and closes on Sundays. Payment is cash in pesos only. It is a good rainy-day choice alongside the prison museum.
