Museo MAR, the Contemporary Art Museum of Buenos Aires Province, is a striking building on the coast road north of Mar del Plata, opened on 27 December 2013 and designed by Estudio Monoblock, winners of a national architecture competition. It is made of massive concrete cubes over seven thousand square metres, and its upper floor, reached by red escalators, holds three large galleries nine metres high. It hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary and modern Argentine art, shows, workshops and family activities, with an auditorium, library, café and shop. For its opening the artist Marta Minujín built an eleven-metre sea lion from more than fifty thousand air-filled alfajor wrappers, a nod to the city's emblem. Entry is free Tuesday to Sunday; it opens in the afternoon and evening, with hours that change through the seasons.
