A museum showing the art collection Málaga's city council assembled over centuries, near the municipal gardens a short way from the historic centre. The premise differs from a single-artist museum or a private collection: what you see is what the city bought for itself, from seventeenth-century religious painting to modern work, by way of photographs, documents, festival posters and pieces commissioned for civic occasions. That makes the collection a record of the city's taste over time rather than a display of great names. Anyone after world masterpieces should go to the Picasso and Carmen Thyssen museums first; anyone who wants to understand Málaga itself will find here what those do not offer. Entry is free, the space is a reasonable size that can be finished in an hour, and the building is modern and comfortable. Its position near the municipal gardens and the port makes it easy to fold into a walk along the seafront.

The municipal gardens next door are free and subtropical, the seafront and Málaga's port are minutes away, and the alcazaba and Gibralfaro castle rise above the area. The museum is a point on that route rather than a separate destination.
