Santos-Dumont's aircraft.
The Aerospace Museum is the largest and most important aviation museum in Brazil. It stands at Campo dos Afonsos in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, a site known as the «cradle of Brazilian aviation», in the buildings of the old military flying school. The idea of the museum dates from 1943, but it stalled for years for lack of a suitable site, until a decree created its nucleus in 1973 and the restoration of buildings, hangars and aircraft began; it opened on 18 October 1976. Today it belongs to the Brazilian Air Force's historical and cultural institute. Around eighty aircraft are on permanent display, including the main types flown by Brazil's air force and its naval and army aviation, along with engines, weapons, documents and photographs, and a faithful replica of the «14-bis» built by the Brazilian aviation pioneer Santos-Dumont. There are twelve themed exhibition rooms and a restoration hangar. Entry is free from Tuesday to Sunday, and so is parking.
