The Portinari House Museum is in the small town of Brodowski, São Paulo state, near Ribeirão Preto, in the house where the painter Cândido Portinari, one of Brazil's greatest 20th-century artists, spent his childhood and youth, and to which he always returned to spend time with family and friends. The museum opened on 14 March 1970 and is run by the state culture department. It comprises a main house and two annexes built in successive extensions, and its defining quality is the simplicity of a country home. It holds many of the painter's works, above all murals he painted straight onto the house's walls in fresco and tempera, alongside his personal belongings and the family's furniture and utensils, with some rooms kept as they were. A visit brings you close to the artist who painted the «War» and «Peace» murals at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Entry is usually free; check times. The town is about half an hour from Ribeirão Preto.
