Town life.
The Casa Maria Mariá Museum is a small museum in União dos Palmares, Alagoas, in the large house where the teacher, historian, journalist and folklorist Maria Mariá de Castro Sarmento (1917–1993) lived, and it keeps her legacy. It began in 1993 as a cultural society run by her family; the town council restored it and has run it since 2011. Maria Mariá was a controversial figure in her town's society and one of the first women to champion women's rights in Alagoas. She called for modern education, abolished corporal punishment in her classes, publicly criticised the neglect of schooling and defended the preservation of the town's architectural heritage. The museum shows her furniture and belongings, crafts, newspaper articles and photographs that she collected and catalogued herself, recording everyday life in Alagoas society in the first half of the twentieth century, from popular festivals, dress and customs to the town's personalities. Together with the Serra da Barriga memorial to the Quilombo dos Palmares and the memorial to the poet Jorge de Lima, it forms the town's contribution to Brazilian culture.
