The Military Brigade Museum preserves the history of Rio Grande do Sul's military police, one of the oldest forces of its kind in Brazil. The idea was championed from 1947 by Lieutenant Hélio Moro Mariante, but the museum was only created by decree on 14 October 1985 and opened to the public in May 1987. Its first home was a 1910 building on the «Banana Farm» in the Partenon district, built as a shooting and combat training pavilion for the soldiers, an architecturally notable building listed as state heritage since 1990 and under restoration since 2000. That year the museum moved to its present home on Rua da Praia, downtown's main street, in the Brigade's original command headquarters, built in 1929. The museum shows weapons, uniforms, medals, documents and photographs telling the force's story since the 19th century and its role in the state's history. Entry is usually free; check times. It is close to the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana and the Usina do Gasômetro.
