The Brasília Art Museum is a museum of modern and contemporary art with about 1,400 works of art and design, including pieces by Tarsila do Amaral and Alfredo Volpi, a rare series of works by Tarsila donated by Brazil's Central Bank, and furniture designs by Sérgio Rodrigues. It occupies a building put up in 1960–61 as the new capital was born, which in turn housed a restaurant, a nightclub, an Armed Forces club and a samba hall before the Federal District government created the museum there in 1985. The building suffered from long neglect, however, and the museum closed in 2007, its collection moving to the National Museum of the Republic. After a restoration and extension costing about nine million reais, the museum reopened in April 2021 to mark Brasília's sixty-first anniversary, fourteen years after it closed. It now shows permanent and temporary exhibitions; recent shows have been free, and it usually closes on Tuesdays.
