The Museum of Art and Popular Culture is a university museum of the Federal University of Mato Grosso in Cuiabá. It opened in January 1974, just three and a half years after the university was founded, to promote the visual arts and popular culture and to safeguard the artistic heritage of Mato Grosso. It grew out of an information and visual arts centre set up to survey the state's art, led by the critic Aline Figueiredo, the artist Humberto Espíndola and others. The museum was founded before it had a home and moved several times until it settled on the university campus in 1999. It was built on the idea of a «museum in action», a living body in constant exchange with the university and the wider community. The museum holds works by Mato Grosso's leading artists and a collection of folk art and crafts from across the state, and runs temporary exhibitions and cultural events. It is a good introduction to the artistic identity of central Brazil and the artists of the Pantanal region.
