The Pernambuco State Museum occupies a 19th-century mansion on Avenida Rui Barbosa in Recife's Graças district. It was created by state law on 24 August 1928 as the «Historical and Ancient Art Museum» and opened to the public in 1929, making it one of the oldest museums in north-east Brazil. Its collection of about 12,000 items in history, art, anthropology and ethnography takes visitors on a journey through Pernambuco's past: from paintings of colonial Brazil and the Dutch occupation of 1630–1654, when Recife was the capital of «Dutch Brazil», to works by artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum periodically hosts the «Pernambuco Contemporary Art Salon», which selects emerging artists to represent the state's new generation. The mansion itself, with its broad garden, is a fine example of the homes of Recife's 19th-century elite. It is run by the state heritage foundation, Fundarpe, and opening times and fees may change, so check before visiting.
