From 100,000 years ago.
The Museum of the American Man in São Raimundo Nonato is the museum of the Serra da Capivara and home of its foundation, FUMDHAM, created by the archaeologist Niède Guidon after Brazilian and French scientists began working in the region in 1973. The area holds more than 700 archaeological sites with paintings over 12,000 years old. Its permanent exhibition of about 90 pieces, drawn from more than 40 years of excavations, follows the human story from the first hominids some 100,000 years ago to the arrival of European colonisers in the Americas, with the theories on how the continent was peopled. Behind the galleries are archaeological, palaeontological, zoological and botanical collections and laboratories, and since 2017 the museum has shared in managing the national park. Tickets cost R$40 (half price R$20); it opens Wednesday to Sunday, in the afternoon on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and from 10:00 on Thursday and Sunday, until 19:00, with a limit of 200 visitors a day.
