The Museu do Homem do Nordeste (Museum of Northeastern Man) in Recife, opened on 21 July 1979, brings together the Black, Indigenous and white cultures that shaped the Northeast and, through it, Brazil. Run by the federal Joaquim Nabuco Foundation, it was inspired by the sociologist Gilberto Freyre's idea of a regional museum and formed by merging three museums: anthropology, folk art and sugar. Its collections range from the belongings of sugar-plantation owners' families to the everyday objects of poor households, folk toys, costumes and instruments of popular festivals, and Indigenous objects. Tickets cost R$6 (half price R$3), free on Sundays and holidays; Monday 10:00-17:00, Tuesday to Friday 8:30-17:00, weekends 13:00-17:00.
