The 1874 station.
São Leopoldo's Train Museum occupies the building of the first railway station in Rio Grande do Sul. The state's first railway started here: opened on 14 April 1874, it ran for just under thirty-four kilometres between São Leopoldo and Porto Alegre and was later extended to Novo Hamburgo. The museum was founded in the 1970s, and the building was listed as state heritage in 1990. It keeps a large part of the collections of the state's old railway network, with tools, equipment, documents and photographs that show how the railway linked the German immigrant colonies to the capital and changed life in the region. The small, handsome building and its surroundings make a short visit on a tour of São Leopoldo, the cradle of German settlement in the state, and it pairs well with the city's Visconde de São Leopoldo Historical Museum.
