The Tocantins Historical Museum is a state museum in Palmas, opened on 18 March 2002 in the «Palacinho», the little palace, the first building put up in Palmas in 1989 after the state of Tocantins was created. The wooden building was meant as a temporary shelter for officials visiting the works on the new capital, but the early transfer of the capital made it the seat of the state government from 1 January 1990 to 9 March 1991, when the Araguaia Palace was completed. It then housed other government offices, was listed as state heritage in 1992 and was restored in 2009–2010. It holds the state's most important collection: stone and pottery artefacts made by groups who lived in the region between 12,000 and 800 years ago, objects of the indigenous peoples who still live there, such as the Karajá, Xerente, Apinajé and Krahô, and the history of the territory from the expeditions and river navigation on the Tocantins to gold mining and the creation of the state.
