The Monteiro Lobato Museum is a public cultural institution in Taubaté, created in 1958 at the «Sítio do Picapau Amarelo», the name of the best-known imaginary world in Brazilian children's literature. It occupies the house where the writer Monteiro Lobato was born and lived until he was twelve, which belonged to his maternal grandfather, the Viscount of Tremembé. It has been listed as state and national heritage since 1962. The house is built of rammed earth, a typical 19th-century farmhouse of the «coffee towns», and its door and window openings and the brick floors of two rooms were kept during the 1979 restoration. The museum holds a children's library of Lobato's books, family collections and an 18,000-square-metre green area with a playground and picnic tables. Plays with Lobato's characters and children's workshops are staged there, and it ranks among the most visited museums in inland São Paulo state. Entry is free; check the hours.
