The Municipal Museum of Caxias do Sul is a history, art and ethnography museum in the city founded by Italian immigrants in Rio Grande do Sul. It was created with the public library by decree in 1947 and opened to visitors in December that year. After years of neglect in which many pieces were lost, it reopened on 2 March 1975, ahead of the centenary of Italian immigration, in an old mansion built in 1884 and given an extra floor in 1893, which had served as a prison, a school and a police station and then as the town hall from 1919 to 1974. Its first director, the museologist Maria Frigeri Horn, set up rooms for the 19th and 20th centuries and for furniture, and a few months later a picture gallery named after the painter Aldo Locatelli was added. By 1982 the collection had some 2,500 pieces, including the everyday tools of the immigrants. It offers guided visits, temporary exhibitions and heritage education projects; check opening times.
