The Kunstmuseum in The Hague is the place: the largest collection in the world, over three hundred works covering his whole path. Amersfoort supplies the roots โ his birth house is a small museum explaining his upbringing and realist beginnings. The ideal order is Amersfoort first and The Hague second, so you follow the shift from traditional Dutch landscape to pure abstraction in the right sequence.

Museum Flehite occupies three adjoining sixteenth-century houses on a canal in Amersfoort, and it is the museum of the city and its region โ its name from Flehite, the old Roman name for the district. The collection covers Amersfoort's history from the medieval period: tools, crafts, dress, paintings and household objects. Its strongest section deals with Kamp Amersfoort, the Nazi concentration camp on the city's edge through which some thirty-five thousand people passed between 1941 and 1945 โ and the museum treats it through testimony and objects rather than figures alone. The building is part of the experience: you walk through three houses joined internally, with small rooms, narrow stairs and views onto the canal from sixteenth-century windows. The museum also holds work by Piet Mondrian, born in this city, whose birthplace is a separate museum minutes away.
