A modern interactive museum opened in 2007 in the old Ministry of Commerce building, completed in 1922, a few steps from Wat Pho. Its motto is play plus learn, and its idea is to answer the question of what it means to be Thai, and how the country's identity was shaped by its ties with neighbouring peoples. Instead of traditional glass cases, the museum relies on screens, games, models and interactive rooms that visitors touch and try, moving through Thailand's eras, customs, food and culture in a playful way. That is why children and families enjoy it more than traditional museums. Foreigners pay about two hundred baht depending on the exhibition; it opens Tuesday to Sunday from ten to six and closes on Mondays. It is air-conditioned and comfortable at midday. It is the ideal break from the heat after Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, with Sanam Chai metro station at its door. An hour or two is enough.
