Da Nang's main city beach, a long arc of fine pale sand on the eastern side of the city, backed by a seafront road of hotels and seafood restaurants. During the Vietnam War part of it was a rest area for American soldiers, who knew it as China Beach. The water is calm and warm from about April to August, the best months for swimming; from September to December the sea turns rough with the rainy season and red flags often fly. Lifeguard towers mark the safe swimming zones. The beach is busiest at sunrise, when locals swim and exercise before work, and again late in the afternoon. At the northern end near Son Tra, fishing boats and round bamboo basket boats rest on the sand, and families can rent loungers and umbrellas along the shore.
