Naarden is a small city in the Gooi region of North Holland, part of the municipality of Gooise Meren since 2016, about 19 km east of Amsterdam in a straight line. It received city rights in 1300, the only town in the Gooi to do so. Naarden developed into a fortified garrison town and is an example of a star fort, with fortified walls and a moat. The walls and moat have been restored several times, most notably in the French era of 1795–1814. From the air it looks like a star with pointed bastions ringed by water. Grassy earthen ramparts and pointed bastions run around the town, surrounded by calm moats reflecting the trees. Inside, red-brick houses line cobbled streets and small canals with boats, and the stone tower of St Vitus' Church rises above the town. Visitors walk the ramparts around the town to see the bastions and moat, and wander the quiet streets. Naarden makes a short trip from Amsterdam by train or bus.
