A quiet hill town on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu valley, at over two thousand metres, known for one of the widest Himalayan views near the capital, with snow peaks stretching in a long line across the northern horizon, including Everest on very clear days. Visitors come from Kathmandu in the afternoon and stay in its small hotels facing the mountains, waking before dawn to watch the sun rise and turn the snow peaks pink then gold, while mist fills the valleys below. Around the town are pine forests and walking trails between villages and terraced fields, including one that drops to Changu Narayan temple in a few hours. On the hill a viewing tower rises above the trees for a wider view. The site is free, and the view depends on clear air: October to December is clearest, while in the monsoon the mountains can hide behind cloud for days. Nights are cold, so bring a jacket.
A long line.
Over the mist.
Between villages.
Eastern rim of the Kathmandu valley, about 32 km from the city
Only on very clear days, as a small point on the horizon; the nearer peaks show clearly from October to December.
