Lake Nahuel Huapi is a great mountain lake in northern Patagonia, about 530 square kilometres in area and 464 metres deep, lying at 770 metres at the foot of the Andes. It reaches out in seven long arms between the mountains, and Bariloche stands on its southern shore. The name is Mapuche for island of the puma, after its largest island. Around it lies Nahuel Huapi National Park, Argentina's oldest, begun in 1922 and covering more than seven thousand square kilometres of forest, lakes and snowy peaks to the Chilean border. Its clear blue water stays cold all year. The best ways to see it are the boat trips from Puerto Pañuelo to Isla Victoria and the Arrayanes forest, a drive round the Circuito Chico along its western shore with stops at the lookouts, or the views from the tops of Cerro Campanario and Cerro Otto. Few swim in its cold water except on hot summer days.
